Creating an Unfitted Kitchen

Last night, I caught the end of the movie, "It's Complicated" and was reminded of how much I love the main character, Jane's, kitchen. The kitchen is so comfortable and inviting. It is more like a collection of furniture and utilitarian items than the traditional "matched cabinet kitchen". It seems like a place I would want to come home to everyday. Plus items you use everyday are so much
more accessible!
While "It's Complicated" was produced in 2009 the kitchen has a timeless appeal with it's "unfitted look".  Lately, kitchen main stream kitchen trends have been edging more towards the unfitted look - two tone cabinets, and multiple counter top materials within the same space, as well as open shelves. However, I think we could do better! I spend most of my time in my kitchen, so why shouldn't it feel more like a living space than a sterile laboratory? Time to embrace the "Unfitted Kitchen"!

Designing an Unfitted Kitchen -   It is all about mixing it up but maintaining balance.

1. Mix Cabinets with Open Shelves: Whether above or below the counter top, open shelves make for easy access. And if you have beautiful things - mixing bowls, plates, platters - why not show them off? Also items like countertop mixers, stainless steel toasters, and blenders can have an almost sculptural quality to them.

2. Include Pot and Plate Racks: One or the other or in some cases both! This continues the theme of easy access.

3. Incorporate Furniture into the Design: Whether it is for an island or place to store dishes, utilize actual furniture in your design.

4. Mix Finishes - Countertops and Cabinet Finishes:

5. When Possible Include Art and/or Mirrors

6. Include Lighting for Tasks: Gone are the days of florescent boxes in the middle of a kitchen. Consider table lamps on counters, pendants or chandeliers over islands and sconces over counter tops
